Frequently asked questions

How do I clean my Merino wool shirt, Merino wool socks and Merino wool underwear?

Unbound Merino clothing can be washed in a regular washing machine at a normal or cool temperature setting. You can use regular detergent, and avoid fabric softener or products with bleach. You can also hand wash, which can be easier and quicker when traveling. When done, squeeze out excess water but do not twist or wring.

After a wash, it is best that you lay your clothing flat on a towel or dry rack to air dry, flipping periodically. Do not leave directly in the sun to dry, and do not hang in hot rooms or the clothing will warp. The most important thing to remember is our Merino wool clothing cannot go in the dryer, so DO NOT TUMBLE DRY.

What's the Unbound Merino guarantee?

We stand by all of the clothing we sell. If you are not satisfied with the performance of your Merino wool clothing within 46 days of delivery date, we will happily offer you a full refund. If your clothing does not stand up to the rigors of normal wear and tear, we will replace it.

You can  also  return clothing that you purchased directly from unboundmerino.com as long as it is unworn, unwashed, and in the original condition in which it was delivered in. We are happy to offer a full refund or exchange for any reason within 90 days from the ship date.

Where does your Merino wool come from?

All of our Merino wool is sourced from independent, mulesing free farms that are Woolmark certified.

Is your Merino wool mulesing free?

We share the same concerns you do and care deeply about the welfare of Merino wool sheep. That is why we only work with independent, mulesing free farms that are Woolmark certified.

How do I exchange or return an item?

You can read our full return/exchange policy by visiting the Unbound Merino help-center, just click this link.

Why doesn't an Unbound Merino t-shirt smell bad, even if I wear it for days or months at a time?

The extraordinary, natural performance of our Merino wool clothing is actually quite simple – We let Mother Nature do its thing.

Because of Merino wool’s natural ability to stay breathable, effectively manage moisture, and  prevent odor-causing bacteria, the end result is a perfect trifecta of clothing that smells fresh no matter you put it through. Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

• Since Merino wool fiber is breathable, you’re less likely to over-heat and over perspire.

• Since Merino wool is great at not absorbing sweat, when you do perspire, there is far less sweat collecting and producing odor.

• Last, the natural, wax coating on every Merino wool fiber called Lanolin is your last line of defence against odor causing bacteria.

The end result is clothing that stays clean and scent free for days, weeks and even months of wear when properly cared for.

What’s the best way to make my Unbound Merino wool clothing last a long time?

Although Merino wool outperforms cottons and synthetics in every single way, it does require a little bit of care to ensure it lasts. The superfine weave our Merino wool should be protected against snags from sharp metal belt hardware, zippers, or jewelry.

You can see a full list of washing instructions here, but the most important thing to help your Merino wool clothing last is to never tumble dry.

Merino wool sounds itchy, is Merino wool itchy?

Our Merino wool is superfine and feels completely different to the touch than the traditional wool you’re thinking of. It’s light and silky-soft on the skin and with its moisture-wicking properties, it maintains that smooth feel all day, even when you perspire while wearing it.

When it comes to Merino wool, what is lanolin and is it natural?

The wooly coat of Merino sheep has a waxy coating on every single Merino wool fiber called Lanolin. This oily, wax coating helps Merino sheep repel water during rainy months and guards against infections. In turn, the yarn used to make our Merino wool clothing maintains this residual Lanolin which continues to act as a safeguard against mildew, mold and odor causing bacteria.

How do I prevent pilling?

Our clothing is made from 17.5 superfine Merino wool and does not pill heavily under normal wearing conditions. That said, pilling is a natural process that occurs when the shorter fibers in Merino wool work their way to the surface. To prevent this from happening, wash your clothing after the first 4 wears. Should pilling occur, throw your clothes in the wash with a pair of jeans. (just make sure to close the zippers). Over time, the shorter fibers which cause pilling will pull away on their own.
